Directions
- Wash the rice in a sieve under a stream of water until the water runs clear. Use Japanese rice to achieve the desired texture. ≈ 2 min
- Pour each cup of rice, add one cup of water to a pot. Bring to a boil over high heat until the water boils over. Turn off the heat and let it simmer over low heat for a few minutes if needed. Let it stand for 10 minutes.
- Remove the lid and let it rest for an additional 5 to 10 minutes.
- Do not mix sugar, vinegar, and salt with the rice for onigiri. This is for sushi only. ≈ 4 min
- Get your hands wet and sprinkle with salt. Place a spoonful of rice in your hand and create a well. Add the filling, then completely cover it with more rice. Form a circular or triangular ball (with rounded edges). Press the ball to keep it compact. ≈ 10 min
- Place a thin sheet of nori underneath to make it easier to handle. ≈ 3 min
