Puto bumbong is a traditional Filipino Christmas dessert. It consists of a mixture of sticky purple rice and sticky rice that is soaked, ground, and then steamed in small bamboo tubes. Once steamed, the rice is removed from the tubes, buttered, and topped with shredded coconut and sugar.

Directions

  1. Wash the sticky rice and the purple sticky rice. ≈ 2 min
  2. Soak them in water for 3 to 4 hours.
  3. Finely chop them. ≈ 3 min
  4. Place the drained dough in a sieve lined with cheesecloth. ≈ 2 min
  5. When it is dry, sift it. ≈ 2 min
  6. To make it easier to turn out, grease the tubes and sprinkle them with shredded coconut. ≈ 2 min
  7. Prepare the steamer for the tubes.
  8. Fill the tubes about three-quarters full. ≈ 10 min
  9. Steam until fully cooked.
  10. Tap the tubes to release the cakes. ≈ 3 min
  11. Grease them, then coat with coconut and sugar. ≈ 10 min
