The “French dip” sandwich is also known as the “roast beef sandwich with gravy,” and is more commonly called a “French sandwich” in America. Its origins can be traced back to Los Angeles in either 1908 or 1918, when the owner of a local restaurant prepared a sandwich for a police officer and accidentally dipped it into a bowl of beef broth. The officer loved the sandwich so much that he invited his friends the next day to try this new creation. From that point on, the “French dip” sandwich became a worldwide phenomenon. Two Los Angeles restaurants claim to have created this sandwich: Philippe The Original and Cole’s Pacific Electric (P.E.) Buffet. Both restaurants have been in operation since 1908.

Directions

  1. Sprinkle the roast with flour, then place all the ingredients (except the bread) in a slow cooker. Cook for at least six hours – this is what makes the meat so tender.
  2. Dice or slice the beef and use it to fill the bread. ≈ 10 min
  3. Soak the sandwiches in the juice before serving, or serve the juice separately in a small bowl so that people can soak the sandwich in it with each bite.
