Directions
- Bring all the ingredients to room temperature. ≈ 3 min
- Melt the butter or margarine. ≈ 3 min
- Mix the lukewarm milk, sugar, vanilla, oil and melted butter. ≈ 4 min
- Crumble in the yeast and let it rest in a warm place for about 15 minutes (until the dough doubles in volume).
- Sift about 400 g of flour into a large mixing bowl and make a well in the center. ≈ 2 min
- Add one egg and the yeast mixture to the well, then mix all the ingredients to form a dough. ≈ 4 min
- Gradually knead in the remaining flour until you have a workable dough. ≈ 10 min
- Divide the dough into three pieces of roughly equal weight and roll them into long strands. ≈ 10 min
- Braid the loaf starting from the middle, in both directions, for an even look. ≈ 3 min
- Place the braid on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and let it rest, covered, for about 30 minutes in a warm place.
- Preheat the oven to 180 °C (top and bottom heat).
- Brush the dough with a mixture of egg yolk and cream or water. ≈ 4 min
- Cover the loaf with pearl sugar. ≈ 3 min
- Bake for 20 to 25 minutes until golden. Check doneness with a skewer.
- If the bread gets too dark, cover it with parchment paper to prevent overbaking. ≈ 3 min
