Corn arepas with cheese

Arepas are cornmeal cakes, either yellow or white, that are eaten in Venezuela and Colombia as a substitute for bread. In this recipe, the dough contains grated cheese.

Directions
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and grated cheese. Add enough water to form a firm, slightly moist dough. ≈ 4 min
- Cover the dough and let it rest for 5 minutes.
- Divide the dough into 10 portions, form a ball with each one, and then gently flatten each ball. ≈ 10 min
- Preheat the oven to 180 °C.
- Lightly grease a snack plate and heat it over medium heat. Cook the arepas for about 5 minutes on each side, until a golden crust forms.
- Place the arepas on a baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, turning them several times.
- Serve immediately, with cheese, ham, and black beans. ≈ 2 min
