Directions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and the zest of the orange. ≈ 4 min
- Remove the green cardamom pods and extract the seeds. Using a mortar and pestle, grind the seeds into a powder and add them to the other dry ingredients.
- In a small bowl, combine the yeast, lukewarm water, and sugar. Stir gently for a few seconds, then let it rest until the yeast has foamed.
- In a small saucepan, combine the butter and milk and heat over low to medium heat, stirring until the mixture is smooth. Then, remove from the heat and allow to cool.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs and set aside. ≈ 4 min
- Make sure the mixture of milk and butter is not hot, then add it to the dry ingredients and mix. ≈ 4 min
- Add the beaten eggs. ≈ 3 min
- Knead the dough until it is smooth and elastic. ≈ 10 min
- Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl and let it rise in a warm place (for example, in the oven) until it has doubled in size, about an hour.
- Return the dough to its original shape, then divide it into two portions (one for each loaf). ≈ 3 min
- For one half, divide the dough into three equal portions. ≈ 3 min
- Wrap them up to form “ropes” about 45 cm long. ≈ 3 min
- Take one end of each rope and tie them together. ≈ 3 min
- Tying the ropes together: ≈ 3 min
- Take the left rope and pass it over the middle rope. ≈ 3 min
- Select the correct rope and pass it over the middle rope. ≈ 3 min
- Repeat this procedure until the ropes are completely braided. ≈ 3 min
- Bring the other ends of the ropes together. ≈ 3 min
- Fold each pinched end under the main portion of the bread. ≈ 3 min
- Repeat the steps for making and braiding the thread for the second half of the dough. ≈ 3 min
- Place the finished braids on a lightly greased baking sheet. ≈ 3 min
- Let it rise again until it has doubled in volume, approximately 45 minutes.
- Prepare the “egg wash” by whisking an egg with a small amount of water to thin it out. ≈ 3 min
- Apply the “egg wash” to the top of each braid. ≈ 3 min
- Sprinkle each braid with granulated sugar and finely chopped almonds. ≈ 2 min
- Bake at 180 °C (350°Fahrenheit) for 25 minutes.
