Gratin of cheese
Toasted bread slices, topped with melted butter, grated mountain cheese, fresh oregano, and pepper, served as a side dish with soup or on their own.
These cheesy mountain bread toasts can be prepared in minutes and make a wonderful accompaniment to a hearty soup. They are also delicious on their own.

Directions
- Preheat the oven to 200 °C (400 °F), with the top and bottom heating elements on, and a rack in the center position on the second shelf, starting from the bottom.
- Finely grate the mountain cheese. ≈ 8 min
- Wash the oregano, dry it, remove the leaves, and coarsely chop the leaves. ≈ 8 min
- Spread a thin layer of butter on one side of the bread slices and grill them lightly until they are golden brown.
- Remove them from the oven, place the rack on the highest setting, and switch the oven to the broil setting.
- Evenly distribute the grated cheese over the bread slices, season with pepper, and sprinkle with oregano. ≈ 2 min
- Bake for a few minutes in a preheated oven, until golden brown.
- Cut each slice in half diagonally and arrange four triangles on each hot plate. Serve immediately, as a side dish or with your choice of main course. ≈ 8 min
